While Punxsutawney Phil and Woody the Groundhog are set to rule on our long-term winter forecast today, Triad residents will spend another morning dealing with icy conditions.

Meteorologists called for an early morning mix of rain and freezing rain this morning, though the temperature in Greensboro was already above freezing by 8 a.m. About 8:45 a.m., there were reports of freezing rain in northwest Guilford County.

And get this: More winter weather is possible Friday and Saturday with forecasts calling for a 60 percent chance of rain and snow.

“It’s something to pay attention to throughout the week,” said Russell Henes, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Raleigh. “It’s too early to put a handle on it yet.”

Icy spots are expected to remain on secondary roads in the area through Wednesday. Just making the trek from the driveway to the highway is difficult in some areas.

Road crews continued their work Monday to clear the city’s major thoroughfares and began working on secondary streets in the evening.

“We are wrapping up work on our major streets and moving into our minor thoroughfares and maybe residential areas,” said Mike Mabe, streets division manager with Greensboro’s field operations department.

Mabe said crews will be out again this morning to ensure that bridges, overpasses and major thoroughfares remain clear.

Through midnight Monday, Mabe said, the city had spent close to $300,000 on clearing roads since Thursday.

That figure includes regular and overtime pay for staff, as well as equipment and salt. Salt has cost the city about $160,000.

In the county, N.C. Department of Transportation crews were finishing up clearing slick spots on highways Monday morning and began working secondary roads in the afternoon.

Division engineer Mike Mills said crews would be at work early Tuesday.

The weather also has affected trash collection in Greensboro and High Point.

Monday’s garbage pickup in Greensboro has been rescheduled for today; today’s pickup is scheduled for Wednesday. The city will resume its regular schedule Thursday.

In High Point, all waste pickup has been delayed by a day through Friday.
