REIDSVILLE — Craig Travis , a Republican, will make his first bid for public office by running for the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners.

“My goal is to bring back government to the people,” said Travis, 38. “People feel like they don’t have a voice in this county. I want to give them a voice.”

The candidate filing period for county and state offices begins Feb. 8 . The seats of incumbents Bobby Stanley  and Amelia Dallas , both Democrats, are open this year.

Stanley said he plans to run again. Dallas said she has not made a decision.

Travis said he decided to run because he felt the current board unwisely spends taxpayer money.

“I can’t think of too many things that they’ve done well,” he said. “I can think of a lot of things they haven’t done well.”

When asked, Travis offered few examples of how county commissioners have erred or how he would govern differently. He did say that he supports the concept of a proposed equestrian center, but opposes the county’s plans to help fund it.

Travis, a lifelong county resident and Navy veteran, works for AT&T in Burlington. He  volunteers with a local Boy Scout troop and attends Reidsville Christian Church.

Perhaps Mr. Travis is wise not to go around making promises like most politicians. I hope he does genuinely commit himself to listening to the common folks and represent them with integrity.

As a young family man, who also works hard everyday, maybe he will represent the common sense we use to run our households.

Wise to not make promises, but he will have to have a platform to distinguish himself from the current folks. He already realizes that he can not speak ill of the horse farm or the Reidsville power brokers will vanish him post haste. That is disapponting. If this were a viable project that made financial sense the government would not have to build it. Anyone seen the latest cost projections on this pie in the sky ?

In reading the article above it seems Mr. Travis is opposed to the county's plan to finance the horse park, as are most working people in the area. Only the Reidsville retiree cabal and the hereditary landlords in town support the center.

I have known Craig all my life and just wanted to say I dont think the citizens of Rockingham County could find a better person to listen to their concerns and to take action on them. He is a honest person that cares about his family, friends and the citizens of the county. I wish him some much luck in his campaign. Craig just be yourself and stay true to your beliefs and dont be scaried to be honest. You may have to ruffle some feathers but remember, you are representing the people not the high and mighty in county government. Craig will be great at this because he doesnt hold any punches, he usually speaks his mind. GO GET-EM Craig!!! bring govt back to the citizens.

Commissioners erred when they refused to listen to the people. When we stood before them and told them we were unemployed, told them we didn’t want the equestrian center because we had no way of paying for the upkeep and that a few pennies from the hotel tax would not pay for it. It is already running into problems. We are begging not to remodel the old court house for a museum because we are broke, we beg them not to do the civic center, we beg not to build these things county citizens has no way of paying for the building much less the up keep and new employees, we beg them to not to take the bones dangled at them from the state and federal governments because we cannot pay for the strings attached. We are poor and the county commissioners should act like it. The only thing that needs to be on their plates right now and in the near future is necessities and PRIVATE jobs (not government jobs). We beg like animals and we are not even acknowledged that we are in their presents. I have this to say that if I can get one or two new commissioners on that board that will listen to the people and stop the maddiness of spending. Then I’ll hold the signs, run my mouth, work the phones, work the poles and do anything it takes to keep the Government out of my pocketbook. I’m still Mad they cried to raise the property taxes because they were so poor and then they got the money and became rich enough to give raises and hire new people. WE ARE BROKE and with NO JOBS. I don’t need experience on the board; I need an ear that listens to ME.
