Short Orders: Couple opens The Sub Spot at Brassfield

Wednesday, January 27, 2010
(Updated 4:05 am)

Kristin Rolph has learned to make iced tea just the way people around here seem to like it. The Michigan native learned how to make sweet tea when she and her husband, Abraham, or "Abe" as some call him, operated Oakcrest Family Restaurant. They ran the Battleground Avenue restaurant for three years before selling it in 2005.

After a hiatus from food service, the couple have opened The Sub Spot (3709-D Battleground Ave.; 285-7179) at Brassfield Shopping Center in Greensboro.

The shop, a couple of doors down from Ham's Restaurant, features hot and cold subs with Boar's Head deli meats and cheeses. Subs ($4.95 for a 6-inch, $6.95 for a foot-long) include Tuna Salad, Classic Italian, Grilled Chicken, Reuben and Veggie. Or build your own with a choice of freshly baked bread or a wrap (sundried tomato, wheat), meat and cheese, toppings and sauce.

The Sub Spot offers salads (Greek, Garden) and a daily soup such as chicken noodle, cream of broccoli or potato. Fresh-baked cookies round things off.

Specials include any 6-inch sub with chips and drink for $5 or buy one 6-inch sub and get another 6-inch sub for free.

The shop also offers party platters and, just in time for Superbowl, is offering 20 percent off any platter.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Soul-food restaurant now on Groometown Road

Filet of Soul has moved to 3601 Groometown Road in Greensboro.

The restaurant originally opened on Tate Street before relocating to Palmer Plaza on Yanceyville Street. Now, owners Ricky Lee and his wife, Joy, have opened a take-out-only location behind Elizabeth's Pizza at Sedgefield Village.

Filet of Soul continues to offer traditional Southern and soul food such as fried fish and chicken, meatloaf, chicken and dumplings and chitterlings (or chitlins, as folks around here call them). Sides include mac and cheese, potato salad, collard greens, candied yams and corn bread.

Call 323-7978 to find out what the daily offering is. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, noon to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Bavarian-style market and pub pours last brew

Old World beer and brat lovers are hoisting a final stein to Mr. Dunderbak's.

After two decades of pouring lagers, bocks and old-style ales, the Four Seasons Town Centre restaurant has closed.

Before wine and micro brew shops became a norm in the Triad, Mr. Dunderbak's was a destination for hard-to-find old country brews and imported meats and cheeses.

The distinctive, comforting aroma and Old World biergarten and marketplace ambiance beckoned patrons in to feast on Bavarian-style sausages and grilled sandwiches such as Dunderbak's Ultimate Reuben.

The Black Pearl changes its name and concept

The owner of The Black Pearl closed the restaurant temporarily to alter the restaurant's concept.

The restaurant is now called Gate City Tavern (3706 High Point Road, Greensboro; 855-0079) and is supposed to reopen this week.

Efforts to reach the owner have been unsuccesful.

Bruegger's Bagel shuts down on West Wendover

Bruegger's Bagels on West Wendover Avenue has closed.

A spokesperson for the chain says Bruegger's 2010 Bottomless Mug holders can get a full refund and still keep the mug by calling (888) 8BAKERY.

Additional Bruegger's locations can still be found in Greensboro at 3211 Battleground Ave., 431 Pisgah Church Road and 3116 W. Friendly Ave.

Coffee shop proceeds benefit four-legged pals

From 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Greensborough Coffee (400 State St., Greensboro; 274-1308) will donate 10 percent of sales to the Animal Rescue and Foster Program.

Lyn Koonce and Friends provide live acoustic music from 7 to 9 p.m.

Celebrate the Big Easy at Fincastles Diner

In addition to traditional jambalaya ($8), red beans and rice ($7) and crawfish etoufee ($8.95), Fincastles will offer Chicken and Andouille Gumbo ($8), Creole Seafood Gumbo ($9) and Quail and Pheasant Gumbo ($9).

Po'boys include Barbecue Shrimp ($10.25), Crawfish ($10.25), Oysters en Brochette ($10.25) and Shrimp Marcellus ($10.25).

And don't forget the bread pudding ($4.95): White Chocolate Bourbon Pecan or Banana Fosters Bread.

The Mardi Gras menu runs through Fat Tuesday, Feb. 16.

More good eats from Crescent City in Gate City

Lucky 32 (1421 Westover Terrace, Greensboro; 370-0707) has already rolled out a menu fit for revelry.

The restaurant has always put a unique spin to Southern cuisine with Sweet Potato Hushpuppies, Southern Crescent Chicken Sandwich and Shrimp and Grits.

But Chef Jay Pierce, a Louisiana expatriate, is offering a Mid-Winter Carnival menu with the likes of Jazz Fest Shrimp Bread ($7), Deviled Eggs with Benton's Ham ($3), and Eggplant Creole ($15), along with traditional items such as Big Easy Gumbo ($5 cup, $6 bowl), Flash Fried Oyster Salad ($12), Basin Street Chicken ($17) and Red Beans and Rice ($14).

Lunch prices run slightly lower for many items. The Carnival menu runs through Feb. 16. Visit www.lucky32.com for a complete menu.

Barbecue shack adds sandwiches to menu

Since opening last spring, folks have been finding their way to Chef Jacks Hot Dog Chili Shack (3750-A Battleground Ave., Greensboro) for mustard-based South Carolina-style barbecue and New York-style dogs with kraut and relish.

But owners Michael Corley and Jimmy Clontz are taking things to a new level with an expanded menu.

Sabrett hot dogs come plain ($1.75), quarter-pound plain ($2.75) or hot sausage ($3), with sides that include relish, sauerkraut and jalapeños. Chef Jacks' homemade chili, red onion sauce and signature kraut relish run a little extra. Or order a dog, including a Carolina Dog, with the works.

Burgers range from $3.50 for a plain to $5.95 for a Double Carolina and can be ordered with any hot dog topping. A Turkey Burger is $4.50.

Chef Jack's barbecue comes as a sandwich ($4.25), a basket with fries and slaw ($5.25) or a plate with hushpuppies and black beans and rice ($6.85).

Yes, black beans and rice. Get them as a side ($3.50) to go with Chef Jacks new Cuban Sandwich ($6.50), Latin seasoned, slow-smoked pork with sliced ham, Muenster cheese and a Latin-infused mustard sauce toasted and pressed between sliced Cuban bread. Or go Mediterranean with The Grecian Chicken Sandwich ($5.50), seasoned and smoked chicken breast served on a hoagie with homemade tapenade and basil mayonnaise.

Chef Jacks offers barbecue, hot dog chili, black beans and rice and boiled peanuts to go by the pound.

The restaurant is taking Superbowl orders for barbecue, Three Bean Chili and Tex Mex Chili Cheese Dip. Call 617-4075 by Feb. 4.

Chef Jacks is next to Exxon Quick Snack at Cotswold and Battleground avenues.

I'm not surprised at all to hear about Brueggers closing. That location on Wendover is perhaps one of the worst I've ever seen. You can't turn left coming in or out and you're right beside the on ramp to I-40 making it even more difficult to get out.
