EDEN — Phil Berger Jr. said today he will seek a second term as Rockingham County District Attorney.

Berger, a Republican and an attorney from Eden, first won election to the post in 2006 by defeating incumbent Belinda Foster. Since taking office in 2007, the District Attorney’s office has tried 107 cases before juries in Rockingham County.

The 2010 filing period runs from Feb. 8-26.

Election dates are May 4 (primary), June 22 (primary runoff, if necessary) and Nov. 2 (general election).

I feel the voters made a major mistake in the last election by electing Mr. Berger. He four years later still has no experience. He stated his office had 107 jury trials. How many has Mr. Berger tried alone? I think if you check you will find that the number is very small. His chief assistant does all the work in the office, maybe she should run. At least she earns her pay. But on the other hand Mr. Berger's father seems to show him a little favor in the senate. I know a lot of people will say the Captain does steer the ship, but he should know how to take control if he needs to. We need a new face.

I think we do need someone who cares about the people of Rockingham county. There were at least two murder cases that was mishandled, one being the Cunningham case. I am tired of the DA's office fumbling on cases that continues to rape and sodomize Blacks in open court. Ms. Foster's arrogance is the reason she lost in the last election. It's the people who put you there and you're there to serve them. We need a District Attorney who cares about the people and not their conviction rate.

The main question for me is have relations between the police agencies and the DA's office improved? If so, then I think Berger deserves reelection. The office is efficient and friendly.

Mr. Jeffreyhsykes that is a very good point you made, but if you check the relationship between the District Attorney's office and the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office could not be any worse. Check it out and you will see the information is correct. If the relationship is so good why is the District Attorney endorsing someone in his office for Sheriff and who is running on a different party platform than the current Sheriff who is in the same party as the District Attorney.

That is interesting. I pay close attention to the news and I haven't seen where Mr. Berger has endorsed Bryan Wallace. Can you point me to that?

Berger would have a hard time supporting a Democrat for sheriff in this environment. He would have to create his own political group like Mr. Harrington did to get around the party politics of it all. Mr. Harrington is on the verge of splitting the local Republican Party, much like they did in the 90s when Sexton and Sen. Berger fought it out in a primary. The local party still isn't recovered from that, which is why you have a 5-0 Democratic County commission here.

I did not say that it had been in the news that Mr. Berger was for Mr. Wallace. This is office talk and it is very clear news around the Court House that Mr. Berger will not be favoring Mr.Page.

Berger nor Page are far from doing the job they should. Hopefully they both lose the next election. The two offices do not communicate well. I know of one case a young man was charged with a crime he did not commit. The Sheriff and the D.A. had evidence and witnesses that the so-called victim lied. They flat out refused to drop charges. So you folks out there should think before you re-elect those two.
