The High Point Public Library’s Children’s Room will host the grand opening of the new Children’s Storyroom on Saturday.

The Storyroom will provide a space for programs, crafts and events.

Prior to the library’s renovations and expansion, the Children’s Room didn’t have space for large programs, so most programs were held elsewhere.

Jim Zola, children’s librarian, said the summer morning programs will still be held off site because 500 or more participants attended those programs last summer. The afternoon and evening summer programs will take place in the new Storyroom.

“We’re really looking forward to the summer,” Zola said. “We’re going to try and do this summer with a bang.”

The summer programs will run from June through August.

Paul Miller of Flow Circus will present the first program in the Children’s Storyroom, and he’ll kick off the grand opening at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Later in the afternoon, the “Build It” program will be held in the Storyroom.

The Children’s Room also will have a grand opening, likely in mid-February once an entrance is complete. The room’s collections are already on shelves and available for use.

“The Children’s Room itself is much more open,” Zola said. “A lot of the book shelving is on the walls to allow more tables for sitting, reading and studying.”

Zola said a lot of families use the Children’s Room, and the new arrangement allows families to sit together.

“We’re really excited here. We have more space; we’re doing more things,” Zola said.

“I’m really glad that it’s just about complete,” Zola said of the library’s construction and expansion.

“The customers have had to put up with a lot of dust and noise and things moving around. Now that we’re settled, we can focus on customer service and programs for children.”
