Museum Guild to hear talk on hunting lodges

Penn Wood has been around quail hunting and dogs most of his life.

“We operated a hunting preserve, back in the ’50s, which is now present-day Uhwarrie Boy Scout Camp Woodfield,” Wood said.

His family also owned property in South Carolina and they knew a lot of quail hunting trainers.

Other members of the family were active in hunting, too.

Wood said his great uncle’s pointer, The Texas Ranger, received 10 wins at national field trial championships.

In 1941 and 1943, the pointer was the national free-for-all champion, and in 1942-44, the dog won the continental all-age champion.

Wood has also attended one championship at Grand Junction, Tenn., as a visitor, not competitor.

Wood still hunts with a friend’s pointers.

This experience piqued Wood’s interest in hunting lodges. “I’m fascinated in it from the standpoint of wealthy Northern industrialists, (railroad owners) and bankers who owned these large lodges,” he said.

This includes J.P. Morgan, Clarence Mackay and others.

“I’ve got 500 hours in this talk,” Wood said.

At the High Point Museum Guild meeting Wednesday, Wood will share history of some of those lodges, including the Dodge Lodge on Alamance Church Road and the J.P. Morgan hunting lodge, which are no longer in operation. The Dodge Lodge structure still stands today.
