Former Guilford College coach, professor and administrator Dr. Herb Appenzeller is among seven selected for induction into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
Appenzeller joins former football coaching standout Jim Donnan, NFL players Don McCauley (North Carolina) and Mike Quick (N.C. State), North Carolina soccer All-American Carla Overbeck, UNC field hockey coach Karen Shelton and amateur golfer Paul Simson as the hall's newest class.
The induction ceremony is May 13.
In nearly 40 years at Guilford, Appenzeller's work as a professor and administrator produced countless scholars, athletes and leaders.
Appenzeller will speak to the Asheboro Rotary Club on Friday at the AVS Banquet Center at noon. His topic: "Put a little risk in your life".
In 2006, the college dedicated its football field to Appenzeller, and in the past two years he has been honored with selection to the Wake Forest and Guilford College sports hall of fame.
Appenzeller played football at Wake Forest for Peahead Walker and played in the first Gator Bowl where Wake defeated South Carolina 26-14. He graduated from Wake Forest in 1948.

CHARLOTTE: Charlotte 49ers men's basketball coach Bobby Lutz has announced that red-shirt freshman Shamarr Bowden of Greensboro will transfer. According to a university release, Bowden is undecided on where he will transfer and will remain at the university throughout the spring semester. Said Bowden in the release: "As far as my career goes, I don't feel like I have the best basketball opportunity by staying." In high school, Bowden attended the Miller School near Charlottesville, Va., and Grimsley High School. "While I am unhappy with Shamarr's decision not to play, I respect the decision," said Lutz.

ELON: Elon senior catcher Mike Melillo of Annandale, N.J., has been named as a third-team preseason All-American by Ping!Baseball.
MISC
ELON: Michael Jacobs has been promoted to assistant director of athletics for marketing and ticket operations at Elon. He joined Elon in 2008.
