Will Bowman of Greensboro and Brianna Clemmons of Oak Ridge were the leading local finishers in the Carolinas Young Amateur golf tournament in Pinehurst.

Bowman was seventh in the men's division, nine strokes behind champion Robert Riesen. Bowman finished two rounds at 6-over-par 148, despite half-frozen greens and stiff winds. Stokesdale's Drew Younts tied for 11th, and high Point's Curtis Brotherton tied for 40th place.

In the women's division, Clemmons' 162 total was eighth, 10 strokes behind Meghan Moore of Bahama. Kathleen Strandberg of Greensboro tied for 17th; Julia Strandberg was 20th.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Duke will kick off the 2010 season as the nation's top-ranked team in the national poll administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The defending national champion Blue Devils edged out Northwestern for the top spot.

Individually, Duke has four players ranked among the top 100 nationally. Junior Reka Zsilinszka headlines the quartet at No. 20. The 2009 NCAA tournament Most Valuable Player, Zsilinszka put together a 10-7 overall record during the fall season. She posted a 6-5 mark against nationally ranked opponents.

Sophomore transfer Monica Gorny comes in at No. 63 after going 7-3 during the fall, which included a win over then No. 4 Rachael White of Illinois. Senior Amanda Granson sits in the 80th slot, while junior Ellah Nze is No. 91. Granson registered a team-best 10-3 record during the fall, while Nze went 7-4.

Duke returns three starters from its national championship team that went 29-3 overall and finished the year on an 18-match win streak.

The team opens the 2010 season on Jan. 19, hosting Memphis at 3 p.m.
