DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — An exchange of gunfire in Danville has left two men dead, one possibly the result of police fire.

The two deaths reported shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday followed the police response to a shooting in the 300 block of Chatelaine Avenue.

Danville police said one man attempting to flee the scene pointed a weapon at a police officer who commanded him to stop. The officer shot the man, but police said they don't know if the man suffered a fatal wound from the officer's gun or from the shooting scene.

A second man showed up at Danville Regional Medical Center and later died of his injuries. Police said they are not sure if this death is related to the Chatelaine Avenue incident. The man was identified as 27-year-old Danville resident Lamont Williams.

State police will investigate the possible deadly force incident involving the Danville officer. Police did not identify the second dead man or the officer who fired his weapon, and other details about the shooting were not immediately available.
