A customer service representative for the N.C. Farm Bureau office in Madison has been charged with stealing premiums from customers who brought in cash payments.

Sheila Carol Williams, 47, of 572 Peach Orchard Road in Mayodan is charged with one count of embezzlement, according to the N.C. Department of Insurance. She was released from custody on a written promise to appear in court on Jan. 13.

The investigation began after a customer noticed that her insurance policy was about to lapse and notified the Madison office. The Farm Bureau has corrected any problems with customer policies, according to a news release. The Farm Bureau lost nearly $3,000 in the case.
