FedEx seeks permit to expand Memphis hub

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — FedEx Corp. is seeking a building permit for its Memphis hub, but company officials say no construction is imminent so they aren't releasing details.

The $28 million permit application has been filed with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement. The permit reviewed by The Memphis Daily News is for a new two-story sort facility adjacent to the existing hub on the north side of Memphis International Airport.

"We are planning a new building addition to our existing sort facility," FedEx spokesman Jim McCluskey told The Daily News. "But because the project is many months down the road, and no contracts have been executed, it's premature to provide details until we have contracts in place."

The current hub is the oldest and largest in FedEx's network, handling about 1.5 million packages a day. FedEx opened a hub in Greensboro in 2009.

McCluskey said the details on the permit are likely to change as the company develops its plans.

"Any kind of property development plan takes a lot of time; it's a very lengthy process," McCluskey said.

Most people don't realize just how long getting permits for projects such as this can take. As long as someone complains, the thing will be on hold. That alot of the times is the reason for the increases in prices..All of those attorneys have to be paid. And all of those palms have to be greased.

Most people don't realize the Fed Ex building at PTI is not in operation. Only 1 jet sits at the facility (haven't check it in last few days). Thank all those good folks who complained and delayed the project in GOOD times delaying FedEx for years from starting the plant at PTI otherwise they would be in full operation. Now rather than hire additional people, etc., FedEx is expanding their Memphis plant. Thanks folks, maybe the new hotel, pool, and museum will make up the difference and employe the people FedEx hasn't/maybe won't. Its a great tax deduction for FedEx.

You are mistaken. The hub is in operation. The one jet you see there is designed to stay there through the day. What you don't see it the work that happens at night. There are new flights, at least 8 per week, and jobs because of them. Seems that all the noise you were worried about has let you sleep so well you didn't notice.

Take a second and think about the investment Fedex is making in theis region. While the economy has held back the airport hub, it represents many jobs. Ground is also building a huge hub in Kernersville, again more jobs.

Just think how many more folks would have jobs now if everyone didn't put up such a fight about the building.

Remember, jobs are good
