RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The first superintendent of a state park tied to a famous North Carolina tourist stop already has experience getting a new Triad area park off the ground.
The state Division of Parks and Recreation announced Monday that Sue McBean has been named the first superintendent of Grandfather Mountain State Park. The state completed the purchase of 2,500 acres for the park in Watauga, Avery and Caldwell counties last June.
McBean was previously the superintendent of Haw River State Park in Guilford and Rockingham counties. That park opened in 2006.
Grandfather Mountain State Park will operate alongside the Grandfather Mountain tourist attraction. The nature center, wildlife habitats and "mile-high" swinging bridge will continue to be operated by the Morton family, which sold the other acreage to the state.
