BURLINGTON — An unsupervised 23-month-old child was taken by helicopter to Duke University Medical Center after being struck by a car Monday. The extent of the child’s injuries are unknown at this time.

Burlington police say they responded to a car crash call on the 1500 block of N. Church Street about 4:15 p.m.

Upon arrival, the officers determined that the child had been hit by a motor vehicle in the road. They also found that the child and a sibling had been left alone in a parked car in the parking lot adjoining the 1500 block of N. Church St.

The child, who has not been identified, was able to leave the car and walk into the road.

The child was struck by a 1995 Pontiac traveling west on the street. Police identified the driver as Crystal Lynn McLeod of Burlington. McLeod was not injured, police say.

The Burlington Fire Department and Alamance County EMS treated the 23-month-old on the scene. The child was later transported to Duke University Medical Center.

Police are still investigating the accident.
