GREENSBORO — About 6,200 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled from a sewer lift station at 6595 Judge Adams Road on Friday, the city stated today.

The untreated wastewater entered the Lake Mackintosh tributary of the Haw River basin. The spill lasted about an hour due to equipment failure. The motor was repaired to prevent further problems, the city stated.

What will it take to have City Officials pay more attention to the numerous sewage spills that take place in the Triad area? I recently moved here from the west coast and I have now lost count on the number of spills throughout our area. This is a major health issue for all our families. I would think that the officials of our state might consider using some of the money flowing from the government to update our sewage systems or hire better water management employees to prevent so many spills from taking place. Seriously, what is it going to take to draw more attention to the seriousness of this issue?

There are no more sewage spills here than most US metro areas, in terms of quantity or frequency. We've only been hearing more about them lately than in the past because of some recent high-profile spills. In a year or two, the media will go back to reporting on the insignificant things and the people will go back to believing that sewage spills never occur. And by the way, if your previous home on the west coast was in any of the large California cities, then the water from your tap was significantly more polluted than anything you get here. Remember that the stuff is treated before it reaches our homes. Sewage spills are quite frequent in the LA region.
