Whitney Engen, a senior at North Carolina, has won the 2010 Honda Sports Award in soccer, designating her as the nation's top collegiate female athlete in that sport. The honor was based on the results of national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program, now in its 34th year.
"To end our season with a championship and then win the Honda Sports Award is beyond my wildest dreams," Engen said. "I was really shocked when I heard the news."
ACADEMIC AWARD: UNCG's women's soccer team has earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Team Academic Award for the 2008-09 season, the NSCAA recently announced.
Coach Eddie Radwanski's Spartans posted a team grade-point average of 3.2. Senior Lauren Lopez was recently named to the NSCAA Scholar All-America third team, while Lopez (second team) and junior Jenn Partenheimer (third team) earned spots on the NSCAA Scholar All-South Region teams.
UNCG was one of 335 women's programs nationwide to earn the NSCAA Team Academic Award, which goes to each team that posts a cumulative gpa of at least 3.0. The Spartans have taken the NSCAA Team Academic Award in each of the last eight seasons.
BIG WEEK FOR SCHEYER: Senior guard Jon Scheyer was named the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Tuesday.Scheyer averaged 28.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 1.5 steals in the two games as he earned his second weekly honor of the season.
Against Gardner-Webb, Scheyer recorded a career-high 36 points to go along with eight rebounds and a career-best nine assists. He was 11-of-13 from the field, including 7-of-9 from three-point range in the contest.
