OPINION

Your representatives just might ignore you

Tuesday, December 22, 2009
(Updated 3:00 am)

In his Dec. 19 Counterpoint,  Ernest White encourages readers to write their congressmen. I do have letters in the offices of Sen.  Kay Hagan and Rep. Brad Miller. I wrote them on Oct. 16 regarding cost-inefficiencies in the 684-page administrative proposal on implementing the automotive fuel economy and emission laws for 2012-2016. Congressional action could save your tax dollars and reduce administrative complexity.

Six weeks later, I have not received even a form letter acknowledging receipt or interest. I did hear from one of Sen. Richard Burr’s staff members last spring, on a Saturday morning no less, about a month after I sent an opinion on a different subject to that senator. But again, nothing from my direct representatives.

So, like Mr. White, I encourage you to contact your congressmen; just don’t expect to hear back from them. Also, you will find their Web sites accept only text messages. You cannot send them any attachments, photos, charts, etc., without using the U.S. mail.

Great link. It very well may be the answer, if not it's a good footnote to the type of representation we need.

I've had no occasion to write or email Senator Hagan, but the one time I've written to Congressman Miller (I'm in his district), I received an email reply within a few days, from a staffer. Which was perfectly satisfactory to me.

Previously, over several years, I wrote Senator Dole one or two letters and two or three emails. A black hole. No acknowledgement, much less response.

On the other hand, Senator Burr, with whom I've never agreed on much, if anything, is *extremely* responsive, if in a somewhat formal manner; always a snail mail letter in response to anything, phone, email or snail mail, within a couple of weeks. I give him a LOT of credit for that commitment to his constituents, even though he is completely wrong about everything. :-D

You are right about Burr in every way.

Save who is right or wrong, I agree Tony. Dole never responded to anything. Burr always has responded with a snail mail letter addressed to me that actually addresses the subject of inquiry. Hagan sends a generic email, thanks for writing, etc., etc. that does not address the subject of inquiry. Rep. Coble responds in writing as well. So I give an A to Burr & Coble, D to Hagan, and F to Dole.

Understand where you're coming from, Dan, but I wasn't thinking in terms of grades, although that is valid. Don't want to leave the wrong impression, though; I could never vote for Senator Burr because of his positions on pretty much all the issues on which I'm aware of his positions.

However, he has integrity and a demonstrated commitment to his constituents that I admire and appreciate.

Merry Christmas!
Happy Chanukah! (belated)
Happy Kwanzaa! (early)
Happy 'Eidul-Adha! (three weeks late!)

Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

I prefer email responses as they are quicker and do not cost the taxpayer as much. While Richard Burr is good at utilizing his franking privileges, it is curious why "conservatives" would not ask him, and others, to use less costly ways of communicating what we all know are canned answers. Oh, and before the little people start whimpering about the term "canned answers" that is all you are receiving from your rep, whether Republican or Democrat.

Yeah. Republicans should worry about a Republican spending too much to mail a few letters. It would appear that perspective, much like logic, is not one of your strong suits.

Burr's letters of course are canned but at least they are addressed to the recipient and they are relative to the subject of inquiry.

Email would be fine too, but compared to the massive waste in govt. this is but a drop of pee in the pot.

Hagan also responds by snail mail, albeit the same form letter time after time. Your post is nothing but bias crap.

I've written Hagan and Burr on quite a few occasions both by mail and e-mail. In 100% of the cases by mail, I've received a letter from Burr and nothing from Hagan. In 100% of the cases via e-mail, I've received an e-mail from Burr directly addressing my concerns and the same form e-mail from Hagan that has nothing to do with the concern I had. She simply assures me she's "working for the people of North Carolina." B-S!

I have had the same problem with Sen. Kay Hagan. If I do get a reply from her, it's a form letter with her pre-planned agenda, with no regard or thought to my interests or questions. Rep. Miller may or may not reply to my requests - usually not. Sen. Burr, on the other hand, always answers me with precise details on whatever my concerns are. Of course this makes it a lot easier to decide where my vote is going next time around.

I find that most politicans are just too busy for the folks back home, until election time, then they are all goodness and kindness.

Mr. ghost,
That is precisely why Mr. Burr is on top of his game. He is up for re-election soon and he will face an uphill battle...even within his own party. I do appreciate his demeanor though. I've seen him show up to events without handlers, or a gaggle of synchophants. Of course after the Tea Baggers changed the rules of engagement, to include shouting our representatives down, I doubt we'll see any of them show up unescorted anymore.

Why are our representatives unresponsive and "out of touch"? Because there's far too few of them, and too many of US. The size of the house hasn't been increased since the early 1900's, when the population was about 92 million. Now, we have nearly 4 times as many people, with the same amount of representation. It's time to increase the size of the house, to decrease the amount of people that each congressperson represents, and decrease the amount of power that each congressperson has.

Don't worry. The Obama administration is hell bent on politicizing the census next year and you can be sure they will find many more democrats--- and they'll create new districts.

I wrote Howard Coble to disagree with one of his positions a couple of years ago. He did write back, it was not a form letter, it address my particular letter. Although I didn't agree with him on that one particular topic I appreciate him taking the time to write me back.

This just in from a friend:

The year is 1947

Some of you will recall that on July 8, 1947 witnesses claim that an unidentified flying object (UFO) with five
aliens aboard crashed onto a sheep and mule ranch just outside Roswell ,
New Mexico . This is a well known incident that many say has long been
covered up by the U.S. Air Force and other federal agencies and
organizations.

However, what you may NOT know is that in the month on March 31, 1948, approximately nine
months after that historic day, Albert Gore, Jr. was born.

See what happens when aliens breed with sheep and jackasses?
I certainly hope this bit of information clears up a lot of things for you. It did for me.

I have written letters to many of our representatives and I have not received any responses from amy of them pertaining to this healthcare bill. Apparently, they have their minds made up and there is no changing them. This,in my opinion,in not representing the constituents;if anything,it is just another political ploy to force another stupid piece of legislation down our throats without debating the legislation first. Both Kay Hagan and Brad Miller will lose my vote in the next election cycles.

rahrah

December 22, 2009 - 5:17 pm EST

Burr had his mind made up about the health care bill as well, and there will be no changing it either, but I suppose that's OK because he agrees with you?

DarkHell

December 22, 2009 - 4:59 pm EST

Richard Burr has always answered my letters. He has gone into great detail when I wrote him about the healthcare reform bill. Kay Hagan and Brad Miller have never answered even one of my letters pertaining to any issues. That is why I will not be voting for either of them in the next election cycles.
