Snow to give way to sunshine

Sunday, December 20, 2009
(Updated Monday, December 21 - 5:11 am)

Aside from minor car accidents, Triad residents made it through the weekend’s pre-winter storm. But don’t count on a white Christmas. A warmup will soon wash that snow down the storm drains.

The roads today

Motorists out early should watch for black ice, because the temperature was expected to fall into the upper 20s overnight. Watch for trouble spots where water collects or roads are shaded.

Greensboro’s major thoroughfares were clear Saturday. Road crews continued to clear blocked residential streets and secondary arteries.

Sunshine ahead
Sunshine and temperatures hovering near 40 degrees are expected for the next three days.

Snow by the numbers
Greensboro: 2.8 to 5.5 inches
Guilford County: 6.8 inches (Browns Summit)
Rockingham County: 8 inches (Mayodan)

Power outages
About 100 customers lost power in Guilford County on Saturday. Most outages were restored by evening.

Accidents
A few weather-related car accidents were reported, including an incident on Interstate 40 where four cars slid on an icy patch. Two vehicles overturned, but only minor injuries were reported.

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow. When is the last time we had a white Christmas?

Hard to play golf in the snow.
I know a lot of people like snow.
I am not one of them.

After living in Alaska for 1 year, I also hate snow, but we still got in a few holes up there. Easy to do because not a whole lot of people are willing, but you can dig out the pin holes and get in an entire round. You need good skills on spoting the ball path, buy if you invoke "winter rules" and dig up your ball (without penalty of course) and play through, it can be quite an enjoyable time. PS- night time glow in the dark balls help! (so does taking my cousin Jim ar Jack along with!) :)

I'm not a big snowfan either but I can deal with it. It's the freezing rain I dread most.

Have they called off school yet?

Most systems around here announced as early as 6:30 this morning that they were closing early.

They most certainly will. I am just glad that this time I don't actually NEED bread and milk unlike the other times it has threatened snow. I hate being in that crowd and looking like a nut!

That has happened to me as well..I have never understood the purpose of buying up the bread and milk. In Maine (last place we lived) 2-4 inches is refered to as "light frost"

I just googled your info james...and I think you are mistaken. Maine gets 85 inches of snow per year...2 - 4 inches would seem more like "partly cloudy". No wonder you are here now. And the bread and milk thing is a tradition...not a necessity. Makes you wonder if the grocers have a little "under the table" going on with the weather forecasters.

Bread, eggs and milk. My theory is that there are people who, for some reason, when it snows, are compelled to eat nothing but french toast.

One problem around here is ice causing a loss of power in which case people will buy up things that can be cooked or heated on a camp stove. Personally, we've never been snowed in to the point where we couldn't get out to shop or eat after a couple of hours, and we only have front-wheel drive!

LOL I know what's the deal with that?

They already have. I had to run to Teeter last night to pick up some baby formula and I had to wait on someone to come to their car because there was not a single parking spot left. It's insane how many people go crazy over such a light amount of snow.

Now, if we end up getting a foot of snow, that will bring things to a standstill because we aren't prepared for stuff like that. But hey, when was the last time weathermen were right?

Why is bread and milk "survival food"? It ain't gonna keep you well nourished.

On top of that, you can't drink all that milk before it goes bad. And if you lose power, the milk will go bad quick.

I went to the grocery store to pick up ONE loaf of bread because I was out and had to do my regular shopping anyway.

Good Grief

December 19, 2009 - 6:09 pm EST

Sorry to nit-pick here, but couldn't you just put your milk outside?

Panacea

December 19, 2009 - 6:57 pm EST

Sure . . .and if I lost power I probably would.

But you still can only drink so much milk before it goes bad :)

Let's hope they wait until we get here - then it counts as a day!

you know they have a deal with the grocery stores...When they have an overload of bread, milk and water, they share the proceeds with the news co.

Bring on the Christmas snow...a little early, but I'll take it! Although I have to finish my shopping this weekend I would still like to see some white stuff for Christmas! :)

dad-blarnrit....i have procrastinated on my xmas shopping and was planning to do it on sat... more family members might be receiving hand knit items as gifts, as I'm stocked with yarn at the house & it's lookin' like I'll have some time on my hands (french toast cooks up nice & quick, too :) )

Does College Hill HOA allow people to have snow on their lawn?

Panacea

December 17, 2009 - 10:46 am EST

Of course it's their fault.

Haven't you ever heard of Hell freezing over :P

d_random

December 18, 2009 - 5:26 pm EST

I would not be surprised if city council created a project to put a dome over Greensboro to protect if from the elements.
And if they hid it in the Parks and Recreation bond IT WOULD PASS!

We will see nothing! The first snow warnings of the season (usually before Christmas) are sponsored by the Dairy and Bakery enterprises. This is their "Black Friday". Go loot the stores for milk and bread now sheeple.
