Boy finds, returns stolen purse containing $1,900

GREENSBORO — Crooks beware: There are good kids out there looking to thwart your dastardly — and dumb — deeds.

Or as Donna Myers sees it, her son returning a stolen purse with nearly $2,000 cash is good beating evil.

On Saturday morning, Myers and her three kids helped their Fisher Park neighbors plant and water 12 trees in the park near North Elm Street .

Myers and her oldest son, 11-year-old Edward , went to retrieve water from the creek and spotted a waterlogged purse on the bank.

Edward, a Boy Scout, jumped down three feet onto a flat rock to grab the heavy, black purse. Myers unzipped the bag and the wallet inside.

“I noticed there was no money on the side billfold part, and I opened up this zipper and that’s where I saw all the Benjamins,” she said.

Nineteen of them, police said.

Officer M.L. Sletten arrived and called the phone number on a checkbook.

The owner of the purse showed up a short time later. She said she had left her purse in the car on Thanksgiving while visiting her daughter on Magnolia Street .

When she returned, her car had been broken into and her purse was gone. About $30 in the main billfold was stolen.

Sletten said the suspects likely flung the purse in the creek.

As a reward, the woman gave Edward one of those soaked $100 bills. He bought a $60 Carolina Panthers jersey and gave the rest to his mom.

“It was a great ending,” Myers said. “Especially right here before the holidays.”

He's a great kid and his parents deserve a great deal of credit! From an old 1963 model Eagle Scout, "Nice going, young man! As always, Be Prepared."

As an old Eagle Scout Mike, I'm sure you also know the saying "Do a good turn daily." I think he did his good turn for the day.

Kudos also to the owner for her generosity in rewarding these fine people.

Several good lessons here:

To the finder: sometimes good deeds do get rewarded.
To the purse owner: carrying $2000 in cash and leaving it in your car is a really dumb thing to do–and you are very lucky an honest young man helped you out.

Agreed: they are good people to return the purse. Bravo. Not sure why the reporter gives all the credit to the son. Looks to me like the mom was just as involved.

No need to over-write and turn this into something it isn't. This is NOT a story of a kid baffling bad guys. It's just a nice story about a mom and her son who found a purse. The mom was curious enough to poke around in the wallet, and she found the cash that the thieves, being no doubt in a hurry to lose the evidence, failed to find. Thieves often aren't too clever.

The victim must not have wanted to go public with the fact that she left way too much cash in her car. Not clever, either. Why would someone leave $1,900 in cash in a car when she could just stash it in her pocket or some other safer place? Did reporter call the victim to confirm the story?

Also would have been better with an illustration of a $100 bill to accompany the text. What's with the pic of a $20? That too misses the point.

The point is that in this day and time it speaks volumes that this young scout and his mom chose to return the purse. They could have easily taken the purse home and never reported it. Scouting is a way of life, not just a meeting once a week. This mom was out with her children providing a service to their community when they discovered the purse. She wasn't using a video game or TV to babysit her kids which is the case alot today.

This wasn't turned into something it isn't. The real story is what it takes to raise a young man like this. Congratulations Mom. The point wasn't missed.

WONDERFUL! I have to give credit to the boy AND his mom! I can tell she's a good woman...she could have easily decided to keep the money instead of turning it in. Great job on your raising your son to be a great young man!

Great kid and parenting! But it's sad that we make a big deal out of this nice kid's action, because such things should be the norm not the anomaly.

Very well done Edward! And props to your mom who has obviously taught you some very important life values. I have only a couple questions here: Has anyone notified the Carolina Panthers organization of this story and if that has been done, how long do we think it will take for the Panthers to do the right thing and refund this exemplary young man the $60 he paid for the jersey? Hopefully not longer than it takes to cut a check and Fed Ex it to Edward. :) As for the poster who called the woman who left her purse in her car stupid, yeah, you're right and a good thing you mentioned it because she probably never would have worked that out herself. LOL Reality check time people - all of us do really stupid things at times.

Yes, good news is so hard to find, but when a little good news does come along it's refreshing. This is a wonderful story of honesty, kindness, and giving, right here at Christmas....wonderful. I truly appreciated it. Kudos to everyone involved! :)
