GREENSBORO – Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel in space, will be the keynote speaker for UNCG's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

The event starts at 7 p.m. Jan. 26, in Elliott University Center Auditorium. The event is open to the public at no charge, but tickets are required. Tickets will be available at the UNCG Box Office beginning Jan. 19.

Jemison served as a NASA astronaut for six years, conducting experiments in life sciences, material sciences and bone cell research during her space flight in 1992, UNCG stated in a news release.

More recently, Jemison developed a new business, BioSentient Corporation, a medical technology company that creates and markets mobile equipment worn to monitor the body’s vital signs and train people to respond favorably in stressful situations.
