Sophomore forward Alex Dixon's 28th-minute goal was all the offense No. 5 seed North Carolina needed in its 1-0 win against Indiana in the third round of the NCAA men's soccer championship.
Neither team appeared aggressive in the early minutes until the Hoosiers nearly found the back of the net on a header by Lee Hagedorn that Haggerty saved in the 26th minute.
The Tar Heels quickly answered with Dixon's game-winning score in the 28th minute.
"It's important for us to get that first goal, because we know if we get the first one we can hold teams scoreless," said UNC's Jordan Graye.
UNC almost doubled its lead a minute later when Zach Loyd headed a Kirk Urso corner kick on frame — but Indiana's Darren Yeagle saved the ball off the line. UNC goalkeeper Brooks Haggerty made four saves. The Hoosiers (11-10-2) were limited to nine shots and two corner kicks, as UNC (15-2-3) recorded its third straight shutout since the close of the regular season.
UNC hosts Drake — a 6-4 winner at Boston College on Sunday — at 6 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.
WAKE FOREST 4, DUKE 2: Wake Forest scored three first-half goals and held off Duke to post a 4-2 win in the NCAA soccer tournament's third round.
The third-seed Demon Deacons (16-3-3) advance to the quarterfinal for the fourth consecutive year. They will host the winner of the UCLA-UC Santa Barbara match at 7 p.m. Saturday.
"I think it was a tremendous treat for the soccer fans in Winston-Salem tonight," Wake head coach Jay Vidovich said. "They saw six goals. It was a tremendous start to the match for us. We scored three first half goals and I thought it really could have blown open when Corben (Bone) hit the post early in the second half."
It was Bone's 12th assist of the season and 37th of his career.
Duke finishes the season 14-7.
"I thought in the first 20 minutes of the game we had some good opportunities and unfortunately we didn't take them," Duke head coach John Kerr said. "But it started off really well for us. Unfortunately Wake Forest is very talented and they converted three good opportunities they had in the first half and it was unfortunate because I thought we played quite well."
