College women: Triple-double aids Duke's rout

Jasmine Thomas had 11 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists for the third triple-double in Duke history and the 10th-ranked Blue Devils beat Marquette 74-43 on Friday.

Thomas joined Monique Currie and Katie Meier as the only Blue Devils with a triple-double.

Bridgette Mitchell added 13 points, Krystal Thomas 12 and Joy Cheek 11 for the Blue Devils (5-1), who shot 52.5 percent from the field (31 for 59).

Lauren Thomas-Johnson scored 13 points for Marquette (4-2), which was 17 for 68 (25 percent) from the floor.

With the game tied 9-9, Duke went on a 10-0 run over the next 3 minutes and then pushed the lead to 29-16 at the half. Duke put the game away early in the second half going on a 12-2 spurt to start the second half.

Marquette could only get as close as 17 the rest of the way.

N.C. STATE 76, NORTHWESTERN (La.) STATE: 67: Freshman Marissa Kastanek led all scorers with 16 points for the Wolfpack (5-1), while senior Lucy Ellison set career-highs with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Nikitta Gartrell scored 13 and Tia Bell scored 10 -- her third-straight double-digit scoring output off the bench.

A 10-2 run in the second half gave N.C. State a 64-54 advantage with 5:47 left to play. Ellison made four of her career-best nine free throws in the run.

The Wolfpack had a season-high seven blocks, including three by Bell that moved her into sole possession of ninth in school history with 85, passing former Wolfpack great Andrea Stinson.

MARYLAND 79, HOWARD 51: Freshman Tianna Hawkins had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Maryland beat Howard despite playing the second half without leading scorer and rebounder Lynetta Kizer, who left with a sprained left ankle.

Kizer was injured with 1:21 left in the first half. The 6-foot-4 sophomore fell to the floor near the foul line and groaned in agony before being helped from the court.

NO. 12 FLORIDA STATE 82, AUBURN 67: Alysha Harvin scored 18 points to lead No. 12 Florida State to a win at the Seminole Classic.

The Seminoles (5-0) used an 11-0 run early in the second period to gain the lead and kept it. That run included FSU's first two 3-pointers of the game. Florida State hit 6 of 9 from 3-point range in the second period after missing all six first-half threes.

"We got better open looks as a result of who we were defensively," FSU coach Sue Semrau said. "They all had a lot of confidence in one another to knock shots down."

After trailing by as many as nine in the first, the Seminoles used an 11-0 run early in the second period to gain the lead and keep it. That run included FSU's first two 3-pointers of the game.

Auburn freshman Nicolle Thomas paced the Tigers (3-3) in the first half, scoring 18 of her game-high 27 points, including four 3-pointers. The Tigers' long distance touch faded in the second, as they missed nine of 11 3-point attempts after shooting 50 percent in the first.

"You get that break in the half and you never know what's going to happen when you come back out," Auburn coach Nell Fortner said.

NO. 24 PITTSBURGH 63, APPALACHIAN STATE 56: Shayla Scott had a career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds as No. 24 Pittsburgh came from behind to avoid an upset. The Mountaineers (1-3) came into the game with a No. 269 RPI and were picked eighth in the preseason Southern Conference poll. But they led by as many as seven and did not trail most of the second half.

INDIANA 72, CHARLOTTE 61: Shannon McCallum led the Charlotte 49ers with 17 points but it was not enough as the 49ers lost to Indiana in the Junkanoo Jam at St. George's High School in the Bahamas.
