On Tuesday, Nov. 3, Ann Harris, who is my godmother, was shopping in Food Lion on Alamance Church Road.
When she got to the register, she put her groceries on the counter behind that of a lady and her daughter. As it happened, the cashier did not realize she had completed the lady’s order and started to ring up Mrs. Harris’ groceries with that of the lady in front of her.
My godmother immediately said, “Oh no, that’s mine, but if this lady wants to pay for my groceries she is certainly welcome to.”
They all laughed and the cashier took the items off and completed the lady’s order. The woman and her daughter smiled and walked out of the store.
As the cashier rang up the final items of Mrs. Harris’ order, the lady walked back in and said, “I’m going to pay for your groceries.”
Mrs. Harris said, “Oh no, I was just kidding.” The lady responded that God had told her to pay for the groceries.
The order came up to over $70 but after coupons and MVP savings the order came down to $52 and some change. The woman said she’d pay $40 of the total and gave the cashier her debit card.
My godmother thanked her but was so overwhelmed she did not get her name. She certainly wanted to let others know that there are still good people in the world even in such times as this.
The second act of kindness happened on my job Saturday, Nov. 14.
I had a potential patient come in for admission in a taxi for which he did not have the money to pay for. A lady who was coming in for a meeting concerning her family member witnessed the conversation between the client and the taxi driver and was kind enough to go back to her car and get the money to pay the taxi driver.
She said it was obvious the person needed help, and she could not believe the taxi driver was making such a big deal over the cab fare. She didn’t want her money back, she just wanted the person to get the help they needed.
Wow! That was a true act of random kindness.
