SPARTANBURG, S.C. — After three losses to ACC teams, UNCG hit the road Tuesday night and came away with its first victory of the season, beating USC-Upstate 76-70.

Brandon Evans had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Ben Stywall contributed 17 points and nine boards for UNCG (1-3). Mikko Koivisto added 13 points, going 4-of-6 from 3-point range.

Nick Schneiders, Upstate's 7-foot-3 center, dominated inside with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

"We played in front of him and he dunked it. We played behind him and he made some nice post moves," said UNCG coach Mike Dement. "We don't have anyone height-wise that matches up with him real well."

UNCG led by as many as 11, with 5:02 to play after a four-point play by Evans. Upstate (0-4) closed to 70-65 with 1:41 to play on Schneiders' bucket as he was fouled. But Upstate committed a lane violation on the ensuing free throw.

Stywall's breakaway dunk with 25 seconds left gave UNCG an eight-point lead and sealed the victory.

Former Northeast Guilford standout Mezie Uzochukwu had seven points and seven rebounds for Upstate. Ex-Dudley point guard Josh Chavis added four points and four assists.
