Latest travel hassle: Coyotes at RDU

RALEIGH (AP) — Crowded airplanes, lost baggage and delays often greet travelers during the Thanksgiving weekend, but the airport here is wrestling with another problem.

Coyotes.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported today that officials at Raleigh-Durham International Airport have seen an increase in the number of coyotes crossing the paths of airplanes in recent months.

Airport workers and federal wildlife managers usually try to scare the animals off runways with cap guns or bottle rockets. They've come up with a new plan that includes improved fencing and keeping grasses trimmed low to manage coyotes and other wildlife.

One jet hit a coyote on a runway in September and another jet hit a fox recently. Officials also occasionally have problems with deer and birds.

Cap guns and bottle rockets? PLEASE, airport officials, come to your senses and contact the fine ACME company. They have a full lineup of coyote-eliminating devices, including anvils of every size.
