GREENSBORO -- A longtime Greensboro deputy fire chief will retire Monday, officials said today.
Danny D. Shumate, who announced his retirement Wednesday in a news release, has been with the Greensboro Fire Department since 1972.
In the course of his 37-year career, Shumate has served in various capacities, most recently as deputy chief of support services. He often was the first to lead the way, serving as the first Hazardous Materials Safety Officer and the first Special Operations Officer over Special Teams, according to the news release. He helped form the state’s Hazardous Materials Responders Association and the state's Regional Response Rescue Teams.
Shumate has served on the state’s Regional Response Team Advisory Committee and was appointed by former Gov. Jim Hunt to the state’s Emergency Response Commission in 1998 and 1999. Shumate has a bachelor’s degree in religion and leadership and an associate’s degree in fire science.
