College women: Cold shooting dooms Quakers to defeat

ROANOKE 55, GUILFORD 48: The Quakers hit only 25 percent of their field-goal attempts in the second half as the visiting Maroons rallied for a victory Tuesday night at Ragan-Brown Field House in the ODAC opener for both teams.

Jaleesa Osborne led Roanoke (3-0) with 18 points. Jazlyn Gibbs (11) was the only double-figure scorer for Guilford (2-2), which shot 28 percent from the floor overall but led 27-23 at halftime. Alexa Williams had nine points and 14 rebounds for the Quakers.

MEREDITH 67, BENNETT 61: Megan Rahn had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Avenging Angels (1-2) past the Belles (1-6) at Ida Goode Gymnasium in Greensboro. ShaRonda LaBoard led Bennett with 18 points, and Asia Smith added 15 points and 12 rebounds.

CAMPBELL 78, UNC-ASHEVILLE 67: Ashley Williamson had 16 points to lead four Campbell scorers in double figures as the Camels (3-1) defeated the Bulldogs (2-2) in Asheville.

GARDNER-WEBB 70, APPALACHIAN STATE 58: The Bulldogs (4-1) hit nine of their first 12 field-goal attempts, going 5-for-6 from 3-point range, and went on to beat the Mountaineers (1-2) in Boiling Springs.

MIAMI 68, HOUSTON 54: Riquna Williams scored 21 of her 28 points in the second half to lead the Hurricanes (5-0) past the Cougars (3-2) in Coral Gables, Fla.

MARYLAND 76, SAMFORD 49: Lynetta Kizer scored 20 points on 8-for-8 shooting as the Terrapins (4-1) won their 40th consecutive home game.

BOSTON COLLEGE 90, HOLY CROSS 57: Mickel Picco scored 24 points and Carolyn Swords added 20 as the Eagles (1-3) routed the visiting Crusaders (2-3).

CLEMSON 75, KENNESAW STATE 69: The Tigers (3-1) used a plus-14 rebounding margin to overcome 30 turnovers and beat the Owls (2-2) on the road.

Freshman Brittney Griner took a lob pass, turned and threw the ball down with her right hand to become the seventh woman to dunk in a college game, highlighting eighth-ranked Baylor's 104-45 rout of visiting Jacksonville State. Griner, a 6-foot-8 freshman, finished with 20 points, six rebounds and eight blocks in 21 minutes. ... Beth Marshall scored 14 points to help Northwestern (4-0) upset No. 15 DePaul 59-55 in Evanston, Ill., ending the Wildcats' 10-year losing streak to the Blue Demons (4-1). ... Hannah Tuomi scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and No. 21 Vanderbilt (4-0) pulled away for a 59-46 victory at Saint Joseph's (1-3). ... Taneisha Harrison matched her career high with 25 points, Jania Sims added a career-best 23 points and No. 24 Pittsburgh (3-0) held off visiting St. Francis (Pa.) 75-70.
