HIGH POINT — A man who was out on bond on burglary charges engaged in a home burglary crime spree in September and October, police said today.
The High Point Police Department's property crimes unit began investigating a rash of home burglaries in the Laurel Springs and Laurel Oaks subdivisions in September and October.
Many of the burglaries had similar characteristics. They happened during the day and similar items were taken including laptop computers, jewelry, and electronics.
That pattern of activity continued until Oct. 10. That's when Antione Dwight Powers, 20, of 3612-H Walden Lane in High Point, was arrested on a charge of felony breaking and entering and larceny, police said in a news release Tuesday.
He was placed in the High Point jail under a $2,500 bond.
During the next four days, no residential burglaries were reported in those subdivisions, according to police.
But when Mr. Powers was released after posting bond, the burglaries picked up again, police said.
On Oct. 21, detectives were able to obtain additional felony warrants on Powers.
When officers went to arrest Powers, he eluded arrest by hiding, police said.
A short time later, Powers was found and arrested in the 100 block of Woodvalley Court.
Powers was charged with 18 counts of felony breaking and entering and larceny, one count of second-degree burglary, three counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, one count of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle and one count of damage to personal property.
He was being held in the Guilford County jail under a $156,000 bond. The burglaries in those two neighborhoods have stopped since Powers' arrest, police said.
In September and October, Powers was out on bond after his arrest March 12 regarding "his involvement in a rash of home burglaries that occurred in and around the Garden Club Subdivision," the news release said.
