Burckley’s role in Knight campaign disputed

The story in the Nov. 15 News & Record (Allen Johnson column) about my involvement with “Citizen Bill Burckley” does not agree with the facts.

Had the paper contacted me it would have learned that I terminated Burckley’s services in early September. I disagree with the column’s statements that Burckley ran my campaign.

If anyone deserves credit it is an enthusiastic young lady, Brooke Harwood, who directed volunteer activities and worked long hours right up to Election Day.  There are numerous others who also helped in many ways, including long hours of volunteer time over several weekends and evenings.

Many yard signs were delivered, thousands of door hangers placed, TV ads created to run on several stations, and newspaper advertisements were designed.

Add to this the outpouring of support from friends and strangers, sound advice from a small advisory group, and the result was a victory.

Bill Knight
Greensboro

The writer is mayor -elect of Greensboro.

Editor’s note: Burckley maintains that he was not fired and said he was paid as the mayor-elect’s campaign strategist through early November.

Mr Mayor, you don't think for one minute that the N&R would let a little thing like "the truth" stand in the way of them printing a story??
And PLEASE ask Real Estate Robbie to take his signs down for around our city.

Mr Knight...you are a breath of freash air in this town! Most folks would not have had the guts to write a letter like this...thanks!
I am looking for good things out of this council.
(And remember...I think you can have the idiot on the end on your right removed if she won't shut up...and she won't!)

Can you imagine a reputable newspaper writing this story and never checking with the subject of the article? Oh, yes we can since we are talking about a newspaper that appears to make things up instead of verifying information. I guess we should be accustomed to that by now but it sure makes you doubt everything the paper prints.

Good luck Mr. Mayor and you have your work cut out for you.

Imagine if lorraine had done some fact checking on the police department, maybe talked to some folks that knew what was going on...instead of listening to some rogue racist cops with major dirt on their hands. Oh...no... that would not sell papers would it?
And to keep on topic...I feel Mr Knight will get this police department back to where it was at one time...among the best in the nation.

If any of the commenters above actually read Mr. Knight's letter and the editors' note below it, then it is either Mr. Knight or Mr. Burckley that is lying, not the N&R.

If Mr. Burckley were to produce a paystub or canceled check for late October or November, for example, then the evidence would point to Mr. Knight lying. If Mr. Knight were to produce an acknowledgement of termination signed by Mr. Burckley, then the evidence would point to Mr. Burckley lying.

The N&R has nothing to do with it.

Since reality doesn't fit peoples' preconceptions, however, then reality is irrelevant, it would appear.

Tledford, don't you think a newspaper should get both sides of a story? Since the paper did not speak with Mr. Knight, they certainly did not get his version of the events.
