GREENSBORO — A set of benches will soon find a new home along the Downtown Greenway — one farther away from residents.
The five benches became a point of public and political debate this fall. They were removed from a spot near Bilbro Street after some neighbors complained that they attracted illegal behavior.
The benches, created by artist Gary Gresko, were the first pieces of public art along this, the first segment of the greenway.
The benches will be moved to a new location — chosen by neighbors — near a grove of trees and farther away from homes, said April Harris, executive director of Action Greensboro.
The benches could be installed as soon as next week.
Meanwhile, if residents are interested in helping plan the next phase of the greenway, they are invited to attend two upcoming design workshops.
The city and Action Greensboro will host two sessions on Dec. 8, from noon to 2 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Central Library, 219 N. Church St.
The next segment of the greenway runs from Murrow Boulevard and Fisher Avenue to East Lee Street and Eugene Street.
