UNC, Wake meet in women's soccer

Senior forward Casey Nogueira scored her ninth goal of the season in the 82nd minute, and North Carolina posted its eighth straight shutout as the third-ranked Tar Heel women's soccer team defeated 19th-ranked Maryland 1-0 in the NCAA third round before a crowd of 2,898 at Fetzer Field Saturday afternoon.

The Tar Heels will host Wake Forest, a No. 3 seed, in the quarterfinals Friday at 2 p.m. at Fetzer Field.

The Tar Heels have now posted eight successive shutouts. Carolina has not allowed a goal in the past 742 minutes and three seconds of play.

College volleyball

WAKE FOREST 3, N.C. STATE 0: Wake Forest (11-19, 9-10 ACC) celebrated senior night in grand fashion, knocking off N.C. State (7-27, 0-19) in three sets, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-16. Junior Kristen White led the Demon Deacons with her fourth double-double in the last five matches.

DUKE 3, NORTH CAROLINA 0: Amanda Robertson had a team-high 13 kills on a .407 hitting percentage to lead Duke (25-18, 27-25, 25-16) over North Carolina in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Women's swimming

GUILFORD COLLEGE: Justine Merritt and Allison Semmler both won two races and contributed to winning relays to help Guilford College to a 94-63 ODAC victory over Emory & Henry.

BOLT, GAY SET RACES: Sprint stars Usain Bolt of Jamaica and Tyson Gay of the United States will race each other at least three times at elite Diamond League meets next year.

Track and field's governing body said on Saturday that the two fastest men in history are contracted to compete in seven of the 14 cities in Asia, Europe and the United States featured in the inaugural global series.

KKK RALLIES AT OLE MISS: About a dozen hooded Ku Klux Klan members rallied briefly at the University of Mississippi before Saturday's football game with No. 10 LSU in Oxford, Miss.

The members of the Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan spent about 10 minutes waving flags, displaying Nazi-style salutes and occasionally gesturing at a group of about 250 hecklers that included young children. They were protesting the school's decision to drop a pep song that included "Dixie."
