Man arrested after breaking out of police car

GRAHAM — A Chapel Hill man was jailed in Alamance County after allegedly breaking into a home and out of a police car, then assaulting a deputy.

The Alamance County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to 1737 Allen Jarrett Drive in Mebane at 12:36 a.m. today. According to the resident, a man entered the home through an unlocked basement door, demanded money, damaged the walls of the residents and threatened to shoot pets.

The sheriff's office did not identify the victim, who had once employed the man but had later banned him from her home.

As the deputy was interviewing the woman, the man returned. The sheriff's office said the deputy was assaulted as he arrested the man. The man then broke out of a patrol car and tried to get into his own car, but the deputy used a chemical spray to subdue him.

The deputy, who was not identify, was treated for a wound on his face. No other injuries were reported.

The sheriff's office said Jay Thomas Maskell, 32, of 68 Dogwood Acres Drive in Chapel Hill has been charged with first degree burglary, breaking and entering, assault on a government official, resisting a public officer, injury to personal property, communicating threats and two counts of injury to real property. His bond is $50,000.
