A 28-year-old inmate died of apparent natural causes Thursday night at Central Prison, according to the N.C. Department of Correction.
A nurse found Kayin Whitfield unresponsive and not breathing during a regular check at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, the Department of Correction said in a news release.
Medical staff performed CPR and transported Whitfield to the Central Prison hospital emergency room, but he could not be revived.
He was pronounced dead at 10:20 p.m.
Whitfield's body was taken to the state medical examiner's office. Preliminary findings indicate death due to natural causes.
The Department of Correction has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to conduct a review, which is routine procedure regarding unexpected deaths in custody.
Whitfield was serving a 5-month sentence for driving while his license was revoked, assault on an officer and damage to property.
