Hoppers to play Marlins in April exhibition game

The Florida Marlins will play an exhibition game at NewBridge Bank Park in April and face their Single A affiliate, the Greensboro Grasshoppers, at 3 p.m. on April 3.

"We are excited to bring our Major League club back to Greensboro next April for another exhibition game and, in the process, showcase several former Grasshoppers currently on the Marlins' Major League roster," said Jim Fleming, a vice president for the Marlins.

Tickets for the Marlins game will go on sale Feb. 27, the same day the Grasshoppers will start selling single-game tickets for the 2010 season. Tickets for the Marlins game are $10 (seats) or $8 (lawn).

This will be the second time the Marlins have played in Greensboro. The Marlins played here at the start of the 2005 season.

VOLLEYBALL

COASTAL CAROLINA 3, HIGH POINT 2: Fifth-seeded High Point lost to the fourth-seeded Chanticleers Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Big South Championship in Radford, Va. The Chanticleers narrowly beat High Point 15-13 in the fifth set to advance to the Big South semifinals.

WRESTLING

UTAH VALLEY 21, UNCG 17: Each team won five bouts, but the Wolverines' pair of pins was the difference as they defeated the Spartans on Thursday evening in Fleming Gym. The Spartans are 0-1.

HONORS

ELON: Freshman Chris Thomas has been named an honorable mention to the TopDrawerSoccer.com 2009 all-rookie team.

Thomas was the 2009 Southern Conference freshman of the year.

Sophomores Traci Stewart and Caroline Lemke earned spots on the Southern Conference's volleyball all-conference second team. Ali Deatsch was named to the league's all-freshman team.

UNCG: Senior Catherine Hanners has been named the libero of the year by the Southern Conference. She also earned a spot on the all-conference second team. Hanners averaged 4.18 digs per set.

SIGNINGS

ELON: Kelsey Harris, a 5-10 combo guard from Gastonia and 6-0 forward Candice Silas of Richmond, Va., have signed to play basketball.

Bryn Khoury of Greenville and Andrea Pont Grau of Valldoreix, Spain, signed to play on the university's tennis team.
