GREENSBORO – Young visitors and staff had to evacuate the Greensboro Children’s Museum Friday evening because of a gas leak.

The museum is expected to open at its normal time Saturday.

Museum staff were preparing to receive for a birthday party and 200 students from Hampton Academy around 5 p.m. when a gas line was struck during construction behind the building at 220 N. Church St.

No one was injured. Piedmont Natural Gas arrived to mend the leak and Greensboro firefighters closed off Lindsay Street at North Church St.

The smell of gas swept through the building and down the block.

Museum staff turned away families who brought their students and gave them free admission for a group of four to visit the museum another time.
