Media banned from Palin event at Ft. Bragg

RALEIGH (AP) — The U.S. Army plans to prevent media from covering Sarah Palin's appearance at Fort Bragg, fearing the event will turn into political grandstanding against President Barack Obama, officials said Thursday.

Fort Bragg spokesman Tom McCollum told The Associated Press that the military post's garrison commander and other Army officials had decided to keep media away from Palin's book signing, which will not include a speech. He said the Army did not want the Monday event to become a platform to express political opinions "directed against the commander in chief."

"The main reason is to stop this from turning into a political platform," he said. "There are Army regulations that basically prohibit military reservations from becoming political platforms by politicians."

He said only one politician can use that platform, "and that person does it as our commander in chief."

Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, has already agreed not to give a speech at Fort Bragg, McCollum said. Officials said Palin will only sign her books at the event and will not stop to pose for photographs or personalize the books.

But McCollum worried that Palin's supporters might use the media to express political opinions from the sprawling military installation that serves as a base for some 35,000 soldiers.

"This will stop someone from grandstanding," he said. Other members of the public would be permitted to attend.

Fort Bragg does not hold many promotional events, especially not with political figures, McCollum said. He added that politicians do come onto Fort Bragg in their official capacity to meet with troops or do private events, but not to hold forums or give speeches. He said the Army was fine allowing Palin to do her event, so long as it didn't become a stage for a public political discussion via the media.

Palin's spokeswoman didn't immediately return an e-mail message seeking comment and a spokeswoman for Palin's publisher, HarperCollins, did not immediately return a call.

Palin began her promotional tour this week for a new memoir, "Going Rogue," with plans to travel through several states that were key to the 2008 election, including North Carolina. She made several stops in the state in 2008 while campaigning on the ticket of GOP presidential nominee John McCain.

McCollum said it's not clear if military officials consider Palin a politician but noted that she has been critical of Obama while promoting the book. She said in an interview with ABC News that Obama should provide more troops to Afghanistan.

"It frustrates me and frightens me — and many Americans — that President Obama is dithering around with the decision in Afghanistan," she said.

Palin doesn't appear to be using her book-signing events to explicitly promote her politics. She spoke briefly to supporters outside an event in Michigan on Wednesday, saying it was great to be there and not mentioning Obama.

At least one person in the crowd yelled: "Palin power. 2012, yes."

Associated Press Writer Kathy Barks Hoffman contributed to this report from Grand Rapids, Mich.

Since when are citizens not allowed to express discontent with the President at a public event? And since when is the free press (what's left of it) not allowed to cover those opinions?

Orwell was onto something.

I bet If Mr. Bush was still in charge they wouldn't mind letting the press in to bash him, but don't dare talk about Barack Obama because we are not allowed to talk about him or his staff.

One thing for sure, there is no longer a press!
While traveling the Tri State early this week, I grabbed whatever paper the motel had FREE!
You could take the front page from any of them, place it on another paper, and you have the same old rhetoric, on the inside.
Letters to the editor same in all papers, Bush bad, Obama good, gotta have socialist health care, need more taxes.
I think many of the miners, have figured out they crapped in their hat by voting for Obama.
They figured Crap and Tax, will send them to the unemployment line!
Of course the union leaders could care less. They are all about themselfs.

Thank God... Who cares what she has to say? Just capitalizing on her moment in the sun. She's like every politician/CEO/President, what's in it for me. ME..... ME...... ME.....
If anyone sees that differently, take off your blinders...

Obama and the media have co-conspired to prevent free speech and anything that might show a negative light on him. I agree fully the media would be all over this event if Obama had showed up to a military base to bash Bush. Obama and other Democrats (remember Pricey and her witchhunt against insurance company and Obama wanting to find out who the people were who disagreed with his Health Plan). It is a troubling chilling effect akin to McCarthyism.

If the Army applies the same standard to all politicians, then I see no problem with barring the media from this event.

A military outpost is not a public forum. You can't even get on a military base unless you have business being there.

The Army is making the right call.

I agree with Panacea and applaud the Army for its decision..Glad to see Billy include Obama in his comment..Palin is getting all the interest she wants since most military personnel are in agreement with her views on the military and not the weak agenda of Obama.

Can you imagine the misreporting that would be coming out of the state run media if they were allowed to go to this
signing especially is she gave a speech. They are scared of this woman because they know she is genuine!

Maybe the Army will do the same for BHO. I'm sure he will not show up unless the socalist press is bowing down and begging for his blessing.

Obviously, all the conservatives posting here have been sucking too long on the Limbaugh/Beck helium... Clearly, they've forgotten that anyone, so long as they were 'liberal,' who dared speak out in opposition to the policies of George W. Bush were automatically labeled 'terrorist sympathizer,' 'unpatriotic,' and worse - and then silenced by any means. Let's also not forget that anytime Bush appeared, the audience was handpicked (no liberals, Democrats, or voices of opposition allowed), and the media coverage was limited to what they (Bush/Cheney) wanted you to see. But now, suddenly, the media is in Obama's back pocket? Give me a break!

Let's also keep in mind that Palin restricts media coverage at many of her speeches and public appearances. That's fine - so long as she calls the shots. If the ARMY decides, suddenly it's the fault of the media and the President? The hypocrisy would be comical if it weren't so ridiculously sad.

Speaking of hypocrisy: Whenever a Democrat/Liberal publishes a book, the conservatives rush to the microphone to wail and scream about selfish motives and profiteering. When a Republican/conservative does so, it's as if the book was penned by some divine entity. Palin is not - under any measurable, intelligent scale - qualified to hold national office at any level. She appeals to the lowest common denominator (as did GWB), and critics are immediately labeled as 'elitist' by the likes of Limbaugh (who not too long ago signed a $400 Million contract) and Beck (who earns tens of millions/year).

How about a truthful, legitimate discussion? Conservatives seem completely uninterested so long as flinging lies and vitriol is so satisfying. How sad.

Get over your Bush/Palin derangement syndrome. The things you spew are the same George Soros & Media Matters talking points. Stop parroting the MSLSD sexist, race bating, slave traders.

yankeefan obviously your dazed and confused. Bush was beat up by state run media and libs his entire term in
office you must have been asleep for 8 years and no one stacked there audience better than Obama. As far as
Obama and state run media, my god they can't go 5 min without his mug on the screen without going into
withdraw. Let's also keep in mind that Mr. Al Bore also restricts media coverage at his speeches and refuses to
debate his lame books about so called global warming. You may not think Palin doesn't have what it takes for
public office [Gov of ALASKA] but I would put her up against Obama in a debate [without teleprompter] any day.
As far as books have you checked New York Times best sellers list conservatives rule.
