Health officials join faith, flu shots

Health officials are reaching out to faith communities to spread the word about upcoming flu shot clinics.

“We know that lots of churches are taking steps to reduce the transmission of illness — like making changes in communion, even how persons greet one another,” said Lynne C. Beck, health educator with the Guilford County Health Department.

“Getting a flu vaccination is another step in protecting the congregation and our community as a whole.”

The sanctuary offers a good network for sharing information, said the Rev. Joel Locklear, pastor of the Triad Native American United Methodist Church.

“We’re already talking about the flu and the effect it’s having on our lives and what we can do to avoid it,” Locklear said.

H1N1 shots will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis Dec. 5 at health department locations to those identified as being in priority groups by the Centers for Disease Control. Those groups include children, pregnant women, adults with underlying health conditions, caregivers, health care workers and emergency responders.

Seasonal flu shots are being given for children ages 4 to 18.

The health department also is working with the Moses Cone Health System Congregational Nurse Program, which has been proactive in getting out flu updates to churches.

Talks between the health department and congregational nurses about sponsoring H1N1 vaccination clinics in many churches are on hold because of the limited availability of the vaccine.

“We try particularly to offer additional health information and counseling to faith communities that reach out to people who are at-risk,” said Lelia Moore, congregational nurse coordinator.

With Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah ahead, there might be an additional incentive for getting the flu shot now, Beck said. “People will want to stay well ... to participate in all the festivities plus visit with loved ones,” she said.
