DANVILLE, Va. — A police officer was shot in one leg Wednesday morning with a pellet from an air rifle.
A 15-year-old boy faces a felony charge after the incident at 9:12 a.m. Wednesday.
Danville police said a boy barricaded himself in an upstairs room of a home in the 500 block of Chatham Avenue. Police said the boy shot his mother before police arrived, then shot an officer in one leg as he was getting out of his patrol car.
Five other shots were fired at officers. No other officers were wounded.
Police used a shield to break into the room where the boy was hiding. Police did not identify the boy, who was unhurt, or the wounded officer, who returned to duty Wednesday.
The boy was charged with felony assault and five counts of assault of a police officer. He is being confined at a juvenile facility in Danville until he goes to court.
