HIGH POINT — A clerk was shot this morning at a convenience store on Skeet Club Road.
The shooting happened during a robbery about 11 a.m. at the SkeetClub Grocery at 1533-C Skeet Club Road. The store is part of Parrish Plaza, a small shopping center west of N.C. 68.
Waqar Gilani, 23, of Archdale, was shot twice and taken by an ambulance to Moses Cone Hospital. He was in surgery early Wednesday afternoon and his condition is unknown.
Witnesses told police that two men with hooded sweatshirts were in the area at the time. They were last seen running behind the store and possibly got into a car, said Lt. Steve Myers. There have been no arrests.
A Guilford County sheriff's deputy used a dog to search the area around the store.
Three nearby schools were locked down briefly as police searched for suspects. The lockdowns at Southwest High, Southwest Middle and Southwest Elementary schools were lifted about 11:45 a.m.
Police were initially called to the scene by somebody had heard a gunshot and thought the store was being robbed. A second 911 call stated one person had been shot. Police are not sure what was taken during the robbery, Myers said. Gilani was the only person working in the store at the time.
Myers was not aware of past problem at the store.
"This is one of those unusual areas ... for this type of incident is not normal," Myers said.
