RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Former Bassett Furniture Chairman and Chief Executive Robert Spilman has died at 82.
Spilman died Sunday in Richmond, the company said.
Spilman retired in May 1997 after joining the company in 1957 as a sales manager. He also served on numerous corporate boards, including Dominion Resources and Jefferson-Pilot Corp.
The Knoxville, Tenn., native graduated from Augusta Military Academy in Staunton and served briefly in the Army during World War II. He then attended Davidson College and N.C. State University.
Spilman later served as an officer during the Korean War and as an instructor at the U.S. Military Academy.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Bassett Spilman; children, Robert H. Spilman Jr., Virginia Spilman Perrin and Vance H. Spilman; and nine grandchildren.
