GREENSBORO — Two teens and two younger children escaped a burning home overnight after a blaze was sparked by an unattended candle.

The Greensboro Fire Department said a fire broke out at 12:04 a.m. Tuesday at 2006 Lionne Drive. It caused about $80,000 in damage to the single-family home and its contents and left the house uninhabitable.

The fire department ruled the blaze accidental.

The fire department said four children were asleep in a bedroom when a candle caught undisclosed items in the house on fire. The oldest child, who was 18, woke up and led his younger siblings to safety.

Fire officials said the mother, whom they identified as Kristy Bennett, had left the children to go to a nearby store. The home was on fire when she returned.
