UNC outshoots HPU women 31-0 in soccer victory

UNC 1, HPU 0: It took a goal in the 68th minute by Tar Heel freshman midfielder Lucy Bronze on Friday to allow North Carolina to advance to the second round of the NCAA women's soccer tournament with a 1-0 victory over High Point at Fetzer Field.

North Carolina outshot the Big South Conference champions 31-0.

"Tonight was an unbelievable performance," HPU head coach Marty Beall said. "We knew coming into the game that playing North Carolina, with their speed and athleticism and outstanding players that they have, that we had to have a certain game plan against them. ... To be able to limit North Carolina to one goal in a 90-minute game, I am extremely proud of our kids."

The Tar Heels play in the second round Sunday at 1 pm. against Georgia, a 3-0 winner over UNC-Wilmington.

WAKE FOREST 2, KENNESAW STATE 0: Junior midfielder Casey Luckhurst scored the first two goals of her collegiate career to lead Wake.

RUTGERS 2, DUKE 0: The Blue Devils held a 15-9 shot advantage. In goal for Duke, Tara Campbell finished with two saves to give her 94 for the season, which is a new single-season Blue Devil record.

MEN'S SOCCER

ELON 2, COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON 0: Elon freshman Chris Thomas scored two first-half goals to lead the Phoenix in the semifinals of the Southern Conference tournament at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.

Elon (10-7-2) advances to the league championship for the first time in program history.

The Phoenix will play the winner of top-seeded Wofford and No. 4 UNCG in the finals on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The shutout was Elon's 10th of the year, tying the school record set by the 1987 and 1988 squads.

Junior goalkeeper Clint Irwin moved into a tie for first place on Elon's career shutout list with 19 overall. Irwin had three saves in the winning effort.

WOFFORD 3, UNCG 1: Wofford's Wilson Hood scores two goals less than 3 minutes apart early in the first half of the semifinals of the Southern Conference championship.

Redshirt junior Matt Strine scored for UNCG (6-10-3) in the 51st minute, putting a shot into the left corner from 10 yards out. Cruz Oronos assisted on the goal.

VIRGINIA 5, WAKE FOREST 4: Sixth-ranked Virginia advanced to the championship game of the ACC tournament with a win in penalty kicks.

The Cavaliers (13-3-3) play N.C. State, a 1-0 winner over Boston College on Friday night, in Sunday's championship.

RADFORD 4, HIGH POINT 3: The Panthers were down by three in the 72nd minute and nearly came back, scoring two goals late in the quarterfinals of the Big South Championship.

High Point scored first with a goal by Karo Okiomah at 18:58. High Point made it 4-2 when Sloan connected on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute.

Okiomah scored his second goal of the match when he beat a Radford defender in the box and put the ball in the left corner.

VOLLEYBALL

DUKE 3, VIRGINIA TECH 1: Rachael Moss delivered her team-leading 10th double-double of the season with 15 kills and 20 digs to lead Duke past host Virginia Tech 25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 25-21.

HPU 3, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 1: High Point finished the regular season 25-23, 25-20, 25-27, 25-22 win at Charleston Southern.

Sophomore setter Holly Fong set a career high with 58 assists and junior Stephanie Wallin had a career-high 22 kills with a .341 attack percentage.
