GREENSBORO — Time Warner Cable customers are receiving their monthly bills and something extra — 30-day notices about rate increases.
Beginning with their December bills, some cable and high-speed Internet customers will see rate increases of less than 5 percent, depending on their level of service.
Rates will not increase for digital phone service, and the increases will not affect all Triad customers, company spokeswoman Melissa Buscher said.
More than half of customers will not see an increase because of contracts, bundled services or the company’s “Price Lock Guarantee,” which maintains the same monthly rate for multiple services for two years.
The guaranteed price will be held until the end of the contract’s term.
Buscher said 39 percent of customers will see the rate increase.
For Greensboro customers with basic cable, their bills will increase from $57.92 to $59.95 a month for up to 75 channels.
Fixed rates for the company have escalated, so customers must pay more, Buscher said.
“Programing costs, specifically in broadcasting and sports, has increased by more than double digits over the last two years,” Buscher said.
Time Warner Cable pays a network, such as the Fox Sports Network, a certain fee to carry its signal. Those fees have increased, although Buscher did not give specific numbers because of a confidentiality agreement.
One competitor, Dish Network, also raised rates in 2009. In February, several of its packages increased between $2 and $5.
“Everybody else is raising rates, so why aren’t we talking about them, as well?” Buscher said.
A Dish Network representative declined to comment about the rate increases.
Buscher said Time Warner Cable still provides its customers with improved cable and Internet features. The company added 66 new high-definition channels this year and provides the “PowerBoost” technology that gives cable broadband an increase in bandwidth to decrease download or upload time.
“The cost of milk keeps going up, but you still get a gallon of milk,” she said. “Our costs are going up, but you’re getting more services.”
