HIGH POINT -- When the pressure was on in the fourth quarter of a tight game Friday night, Andrews made several mental mistakes that cost them the lead and the ballgame.

The Red Raiders had a 13-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter, but thanks to a combination of penalties and a missed extra point, allowed Kinston to escape with a 21-20 victory in the first round of the 2-AA playoffs. The Red Raiders end their season at 7-5.

Andrews scored on the first play of the fourth quarter, but Quan Stevenson missed the extra point.

"Our kicking game has been pretty good all season," said Andrews coach Rodney McKoy. "You hate that for him, but it hurt us."

The Vikings came right back and scored again, cutting the lead to 20-14 early in the fourth quarter. That drive was helped by an offside penalty against the Red Raiders on a fourth down and 4 to go. Chris Brown, who finished with 220 yards, capped the drive with a 51-yard touchdown scamper.

"He was just trying to make a play and he got caught," McKoy said about the player that jumped offside.

The Red Raiders were moving the ball on their next possession, but then they had a couple of mental breakdowns. Back-to-back personal foul penalties pushed Andrews back deep into their own territory, where they had to punt back to Kinston.

Working with a short field, the Vikings needed only six plays for Brown to find the end zone again. The extra point made it 21-20. The Red Raiders had one last possession, but another 15-yard penalty backed them up again and they couldn't move the ball out of their own territory before turning it over on downs.

"We went most of the game with only two penalties, and then we get two personal foul penalties in the fourth quarter," McKoy said. "One was on the quarterback and one was on the running back. They just came at a time when we could least afford them."

Andrews got off to a quick start after recovering a fumble by the Vikings in the first quarter. Starting at the Kinston 11, the Red Raiders took advantage of the short field. Quarterback Marquez Swinton kept the ball on a option play around the right side for a 4-yard touchdown, giving Andrews a 7-0 lead

After recovering another Vikings fumble, the Raiders were set up on the Kinston side of the field again. This time Swinton went to the air, throwing the ball deep down the left sideline.

Just when it looked like the ball would be intercepted by Kewitt Koonce for Kinston, the Raiders' Mark Johnson came out of nowhere to grabbed the ball and dance into the end zone for a 38-yard scoring play.

That gave Andrews a 14-0 lead with 4:05 to play in the first quarter.

"We talked about staying focused in the second half," Johnson said. "We were running the ball pretty good (in the second half) we just couldn't convert on third down. I feel bad for the seniors."
