OPINION

Republican opposition to reform is pure politics

Saturday, November 14, 2009
(Updated 3:00 am)

All 40 of our Republican U.S. senators, presumably well-informed and civic-minded, are in lockstep opposition to health care reform. For 40 people, together in a group setting, to come to the same conclusion at the same time is beyond reasonableness. These Republicans are being played like puppets on a string by the party leadership and lobbyists’ money.

Legislators should be rational thinkers with independent minds. They are doing a disservice to the millions of Americans they represent. This places party politics first and their constituents a distant second. We need health care reform.

It has eluded solution for decades. Given the gravity of this issue, the irresponsible actions of the Republicans are abhorrent.

This demonstrates how deeply divided our political atmosphere has become, resulting in legislation that is watered-down, stalled or killed altogether. This is politics at its worst, corruption at its best.

On the other hand, 219 people in a group setting 'coming to the same conclusion' is independent thought?

Gimme a bruckin' fake.

The fatal flaw is in the first sentence: U.S. senators, presumably civic-minded,

Are ANY of the politicians civic-minded now? I think not.

I can't wait until Sarah Palin becomes a US Senator .. then we'll see in action a civic-minded God fearing Christian .. Finally.

I am dying laughing! Thank you for that injection of absolute hilarity.

To be honest, I don't think she'd be a good choice, but that's my opinion.

Mr. or Ms. Swerdna,
You do realize that Mr. JDR is being very, very sarcastic?

Of course. And I was being very, very serious.

Actually, Mr. Roseman, Republican politicians have acted like petulant children on the issue of health care reform and there are other issues on which they have acted in the same manner. Here’s an interesting piece on the length to which Republican politicians will go to in order to distort the truth and to basically lie about an issue.

I have a question for those Republicans who don’t have an issue with distorting the truth. If you knowingly lie about this issue or others in order to advance your cause, doesn’t that make you immoral?

This link is from the Washington Post. I know that there are those of you who give the Post as much credibility as the National Enquirer.

" If you knowingly lie about this issue or others in order to advance your cause, doesn’t that make you immoral?"
Do you truly believe the supreme leader and his democrats don't knowingly lie to you and everyone else?
In fact there is no politican in DC who has not knowingly lied, IMO.

I believe this week was a watershed for exposing the hypocrisy of the right and the depths to which they will go to attack. Jon Stewart exposed Sean Hannity for using pictures from an earlier, and MUCH larger rally, as if it were the one the "Tea Baggers" put on recently. Hannity "had" to respond and did admit he was caught in the act. Who would have thought that a Comedy Channel personality would be do better investigative reporting on FoxNews than the mainstream media ??

Again, the left is just so perfect.

Obama said that without a doubt the stimulus would hold unemployment to less than 8,5%. All the democrats were in lock step with him. This is proof positive of the lengths the lying democrats will go to push their partisan agenda. How much are they lying to the American public about healthcare? Anyone who believes anything they say are fools.

"Anyone who believes anything they say are fools."

Probable true.

Those who believes anything the R-club says are equally foolish.

I don't disagree with you, however in general, the masses of the dems seem to think it's only the repubs that lie.

Playbook material Max Roseman, blame Republicans for any lack of support for Obamacare. Never mind the fact the Democrats don't need a single Republican vote to ram this through, it seems they just want a Republican name on the roll call to justify this monstrosity. Reform is fine Mr. Roseman, voting on 2000 pages of gobblygook that most lawmakers haven't read isn't reform, it's irresponsible.

Yvonne

November 14, 2009 - 8:19 am EST

What is irresponsible, Dan, is deciding the bill is gobblygook without reading it and then supporting the lies and distortions by your precious republican party. Talk about pure playbook material without an independent thought of your own.

danagain

November 14, 2009 - 8:32 am EST

I take it you've read all 2000 pages Yvonne? I've looked at portions of it and found gobblygook legalese. If you have read it, please detail what is in it. Of particular interest, can an employer dump employees onto the public plan and just pay the fine? What will the fine be for an individual who chooses not to buy insurance? Will there be jail time for those who don't get insurance? Can doctors refuse to see patients on the public plan such as many do now with Medicaid patients because the reimbursements are too low? And lastly what will happen when we are eventually so far in debt to the Chinese that they will not longer extend credit and the dollar continues to sink as it it now? Thanks Yvonne!!

M/M swerdna,
I am not a sheep. Sorry. When given a choice between the today's GOP and anything else, I will most always choose "anything else". When the party had a libertarian bent and was the Party of Lincoln, Rockefellar, Percy, Javits etc, I was a fan. Today's GOP is such a narrow party that it has no national attraction. The folks I feel sorry for are the serious Republican candidates who understand that abortion, flag burning, guns and gay baiting are not winning combinations outside of a Republican Primary. Believe it or not, there are more serious problems than abortion. Until the GOP throws out the wingnuts, it will continue to marginalize itself into oblivion. Wingnuts focus on abortion, guns, gay bashing and supporting the party's lunatics ('You lie!') like Joe Wilson and Michelle Bachmann. Oh, and before we see our veneer man retort with "Alan Grayson"....let it be said that Alan Grayson never yelled at the President of the United States even when it was George W. Bush. Sad to have to actually pre empt idiocy, but one poor bloke just can't follow along.

Don't know if you're aware of what many doctors are doing now in preparation for obamacare. Many are hand-selecting patients to be under "contract:" with them. As I understand it, they select say 500 patients that will become their sole practice. These doctors will accept no new patients until an opening is created when a patient either dies or withdraws from the practice. The selected patients are given the opportunity to contract with the doctor for a yearly fee which guarantees them a continuation of the level of care they now receive by that particular doctor. I don't know all the details, but I think there is also an advantage to the patient as far as fees charged, medicare (which some doctors won't accept now because of low payments), etc. I gather this arrangement will be to the advantage of the doctors by the payment of the annual fee by the patient, whether they need medical care or not, and will help them avoid having to deal with obamacare.

If anyone knows anything more about this, I'd appreciate a post.
