I believe that President Obama has held eight meetings concerning U.S. strategy for Afghanistan. The president holds the title and role of chief executive. Everything he does, or doesn’t do, sends messages to those involved.
There are only so many options in any decision. The job of his Cabinet and advisers is to bring their best information to this task. Somebody once said that it is important to “do something,” even though it may end up being the wrong thing.
Reading our involvement in Afghanistan, several things stand out. Commitment is not total, or response would be automatic. Waiting for the Afghan election results demonstrated that we have no confidence in their government. Quibbling about the number of troops to send indicates one of two things: Either we don’t have enough troops, or we are afraid of losing them. What else do our enemies need to know?
The final decision is redundant.
