Davidson races draw more candidates

LEXINGTON — A third candidate is getting into the Republican sheriff's race in Davidson County.

Terry Price, a retired state highway patrolman who sought the post three years ago, said Thursday he'll seek the Republican sheriff's nomination in the May 4 party primary.

He'll face current sheriff David Grice and former sheriff Gerald Hege, both of whom have said they will run for office. The candidate filing period opens in February.

Price finished second in the 2006 Republican primary to Grice, who won the six-candidate primary with 47 percent of the vote. Price received 37 percent of the primary vote three years ago.

Grice was appointed sheriff in 2004 after Hege resigned after he pleaded guilty to two counts of obstruction of justice, a felony.

After retiring in October 2005, Price became active in Davidson County Republican politics. He served as vice chairman of the county Republican Party for two years and now is vice chairman of the 12th District Republican Party. He has lived in the county since 1991 and served in the Highway Patrol for 32 years.

Meanwhile, a former reporter at WGHP-8 said she will run as a Republican for a seat on the Davidson County Board of Commissioners next year.

Caron Myers will make her first bid for public office after nine years with the High Point television station. She is currently the executive director of Davidson County Cancer Services. Myers has lived in the county for 20 years.

Voters will fill four of the seven Board of Commissioners seats next year. Three of the seats are held by Republican incumbents.

Isn't Gerald Hege a convicted felon?

((does a quick Google search of the words "Gerald Hege convicted felon"))

Yes, he is.

Dude pled guilty to two separate counts of obstruction of justice -- the very thing he was supposed to serve and protect. And he accepted these two charges as a way of getting state prosecutors to drop 13 others, including embezzlement, obtaining property by false pretenses, and wire-tapping. This guy has as much business behind the badge as Vic Mackey did on "The Shield." My hope is that the "Conservative Republican" party in our state does the right thing by officially renouncing this man for attempting to run under their banner.

Hege finished his time, parole/probation, paid his fines, etc. His voting rights and thus his right to hold office were restored to him last year.

I do think it is bad form for him to run for Sheriff given his criminal history; no former law enforcement officer convicted of a felony gets a job as a deputy sheriff.

Hopefully, the voters of Davidson County feel the same way. Hopefully, they don't want to be the North Carolina version of Washington DC, who re-elected Marion Barry as mayor after he was caught in an FBI sting smoking crack with a prostitute.

Any elected official who leaves office by way of disgrace or breaking the public trust must be made to suffer the consequences of their actions. If Gerald Hege thinks the people of Davidson County have forgotten his little scandal, he should think again. Many people who voted for this man, and I use the term loosely, now know just what kind of person they elected. I can't see any person in law enforcement ever trusting this egomaniac to do the right thing when during his tenure he did pretty much as he pleased. It would be much better to have a person of Integrity, Honesty and a sense of serving the public like a former Highway Patrol Officer in a position of such authority as Sheriff. Davidson County deserves someone more like Andy Griffith as Sheriff than a Roscoe P. Coltrane. I usually don't discuss politics but this issue of Gerald Hege running for office after shaming himself and the people of Davidson County is just ignorant. It is my sincere hope these same people remember the former Sheriff as just that FORMER and do their utmost to put someone of good character and a sense of duty in the important office of Sheriff. Really sorry about the Roscoe P Coltrane aside but I hope the intent came through.

Here's a scary thing. I passed by a van on High Point Rd today with a Hege for Sheriff bumper sticker . . .
