STONEVILLE — A woman ignored barricades along a rural road and had to be rescued from the water late Thursday morning.
Barricades had been set up along River Road because of flooding, said Tommy Curry, Rockingham County's deputy fire marshal.
But the woman, whose name was unavailable, was familiar with the area and went around the barricades, he said.
The woman and her belongings were on top of the car when authorities arrived, Curry said. A swift-water rescue team was called to help but was not needed.
Curry drove his 4x4 vehicle into the water and, with the assistance of a county firefighter, pulled her from the top of her car.
"Normally, we wouldn't tell people to do that," Curry said of the rescue effort.
Initial reports said that the woman had a baby with her, but she did not, Curry said.
The woman was not injured. Her husband picked up her at the scene, authorities said.
