BETHANY — A young mother was killed Wednesday night when a tree fell on her car, the Highway Patrol said.
Terra Swinney, 28, of Lowe Road in Madison, was killed instantly, said Trooper S.L. Wagner. Her 2-year-old son was in the back seat but was unharmed.
The accident happened about 7:30 p.m. Swinney, who was on her way home, was traveling north on Witty Road near Brown Road when a large tree fell from the side of the road onto her truck, crushing her. Wagner said the roof caved in about an inch from Swinney's son's face.
Swinney had been on the phone with her husband at the time of the accident, Wagner said, and he was the first person on the scene. Her husband said he was talking to his wife and heard her say "Oh, no" and that the horn started blowing. Swinney's husband rushed to the scene, Wagner said.
The child was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for evaluation.
Wednesday's rains caused trees to fall all over Rockingham County and some accidents were reported, but most did not involve serious personal injuries, Wagner said.
"It was a sad one last night," Wagner said.
