Kathy Joyce received the Rockingham County Schools 2009 Exceptional Children’s Teacher of Excellence Award. Joyce, who teaches at Lawsonville Avenue Elementary School in Reidsville, received the honor from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction’s exceptional children’s division.
The award honors teachers whose innovative instructional programs have benefited students with disabilities.
Joyce is a 30-year veteran of the Rockingham County Schools, having taught at Reidsville, Madison-Mayodan and McMichael high schools, as well as at Stoneville Elementary School.

Cathy Fleming is the Rockingham County Schools 2010 Academically Intellectually Gifted Teacher of the Year.
Fleming has taught academically gifted students at Douglass and Draper elementary schools for 13 years. She previously taught third- and fourth-graders at Douglass.
Fleming’s peers selected her for the award, which is given to AIG teachers who exemplify outstanding qualities in teaching, curriculum development and leadership.
Fleming will represent Rockingham County in the state competition. The winner will be announced in February.

A Madison man took home awards recently during the National Intercollegiate Flying Association competition at the Danville, Va., Regional Airport. Students from GTCC and other schools competed in the event.
Matt Callaway of Madison finished among the top 20 in the power of landings and short field approach and landings events. Callaway placed seventh in the simulated comprehensive aircraft navigation event. Callaway is a student at GTCC.
