WINSTON-SALEM — A man was hit with a stick and a chair during a break-in attempt early this morning, but he managed to ward off the intruder.
Winston-Salem police said Parogro Cortez Stowe, 35, heard a knock on his door in the 100 block of Westdale Avenue shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday Stowe opened the door slightly to see who it was, but did not know the man on his porch and shut the door.
But the suspect kicked open the door, came in the home and started hitting Stowe with a stick. A struggle ensued, and both men fell down the front steps. Stowe ran toward a neighbor's house as the suspect beat him with a plastic chair.
By the time officers arrived, the suspect had run away toward West First Street.
Stowe suffered a cut on one toe while running for help. Paramedics treated his injury at the scene.
Police described the suspect as a white man who stands 5-foot-9 and weighs 180 pounds. He has shaggy blonde hair, a short scruffy beard and a mustache. He wore blue clothes and carried a stick similar to a cane.
